Having already raked in nearly 700,000 views for his fiery “Vulcan” track alone on Youtube, as well as being named amongst The FADER’s “11 MCs From Across The U.K. That Every Grime Fan Should Know”, Shogun is an artist with very much more to offer, yet at the tender age of 19 he is already leading the vanguard of Scotland’s burgeoning scene.

Alongside his crew M.F.T.M., Shogun represents a new wave of artists proving that the lowlands have a loud cultural contribution to make, discharging a distinctly Scottish sense of anguish and darkly sardonic themes with a realism quite distinct from contemporaries in the altogether more auspicious surroundings of London. Shutting down shows and sticking around for the cypher afterwards, Shogun owes much of his fiery lyrical content to a troublesome youth, but there’s no sound of despondency in his sharp and determined delivery.

It’s no surprise that he hails from the town of Paisley, not far outside of Glasgow, which has an appropriate history of radicalism and disgruntlement with the English establishment – William Wallace himself getting his education there and Tory Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli speaking of a need to “Keep your eye on Paisley”…  That’s probably good advice for the UK music industry today.

He’s no Johnny-come-lately, already supporting the likes of Lowkey and Akala, headlining Glasgow’s famous King Tuts for Tenement Trail festival, grabbing his London debut topping the bill at The Old Blue Last for Vice and coveting a spot at this year’s Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMAs)… It’s becoming increasingly apparent that this young hip-hop behemoth can only be contained by the border for so long.
