Event Details
For its third event, LOVE THEME FROM FLASHDANCE presents SHAKEDOWN by Leilah Weinraub. The documentary will be screened in between performances by EAST LONDON STRIPPERS COLLECTIVE and followed by an LA-infused DJ set by IFEOLUWA.
SHAKEDOWN is the story of Los Angeles’ black lesbian strip club scene and its genesis. Owned and operated by women of colour, the club Shakedown is an underground, illegal nightclub. It is home to a darker, faster, younger iteration of LA’s lesbian subculture. The film chronicles the explicit performances and personal relationships of the party’s dancers and organisers including Ronnie-Ron, Shakedown Productions’ creator and emcee; Mahogany, the legendary “mother” of the community; Egypt, their star performer; and Jazmine, the “Queen” of Shakedown.
EAST LONDON STRIPPERS COLLECTIVE aims to promote the self-organisation of strippers / lap dancers in London and the UK, and to challenge societal attitudes towards strip club activity by uniting performers, creating their own working conditions and empowering dancers. They have curated a programme of performances which will take place before and after the screening.
IFEOLUWA is an artist, lecturer, writer and DJ. They founded Intervention, which runs free DJ workshops ‘for ALL womxn, people of colour and non-binary / queer individuals’. Please stick around after the performances for Ifeoluwa’s XXXclusive, Shakedown-inspired DJ set.
All proceeds got to EAST LONDON STRIPPERS COLLECTIVE (and the DJ).
